Charger Plates

A charger plate is a fantastic way to add color and texture to any dinner table. A decorative charger plate is an elegant and underused element of a place setting. Also known as a chop plate, service plate, or underplate. A charger plate gets its “decorative” label because it never directly touches any food; instead it functions as an aesthetic resting place onto which food bearing dishes and bowls are placed.

Charger plates are used to dress up dinner tables at parties, weddings, and other special events. While charger plates have been around since the 1800s, they returned to popularity in the late 90s. Charger plate etiquette and use varies among caterers and restaurants. Some professional catering companies remove the decorative charger plate as soon as the guests are seated. Often a decorative charger plate is left on the table as a large coaster for the soup and salad courses and then removed for the main entree. Others keep the underplate or charger together until the end of the entire meal. In addition to standard china plates can be made of metal, wood, mother of peal, and even leather can be found on rare occasions.

Although the plates are often associated with very formal dinners, they can be used for all occasions to spice up the hosting repertoire. A colorful charger can revitalize day to day dinner plates for a party. One’s with a harmonizing hue or made from a showy metallic material can add a touch of class to an informal gathering. Especially popular for weddings, and formal events.
